A New Print Outdoor Magazine
I recently came across a new independent print magazine that shares first-person adventure stories, emphasising the journey and experience rather than record-breaking feats or extreme challenges. I ordered the first issue of New Mountain Magazine and the kind folks there included a neat magazine branded complimentary Nalgene bottle.
From their website New Mountain Magazine is “an independent outdoor adventure publication rewriting the narrative of adventure storytelling. Instead of chasing extreme, record-breaking feats, New Mountain dives into the real and relatable—sharing author-led personal stories, photographs, and interviews that celebrate those who find joy in the outdoors, on their own terms.”
On first look the photography, design and layout is really strong, and there’s a lot of diverse stories from across the globe and covering all types of adventure travel. At a little over 200 pages it’s almost more book than magazine, but this in some ways fits with the ethos of print media - best consumed in multiple sittings with a large mug of tea.
Starting a new outdoor publication must be challenging (at least I imagine it is), especially one that's print-only. The team behind this one, based here in the UK, seems to be off to a solid start.
Issue One is available for £23 here and shares “personal narratives, interviews and photo essays that explore how individuals connect with nature in their own unique way—celebrating real, relatable experiences in the outdoors.”
